Profile
Name: Harold Shaw
Teaching Credential: Maine Special Education Teacher (282) – Certified 2005
Education: Bachelor of Science – Liberal Arts, The University of the State of New York – 1994
Years in education: Over 10 years in childcare, case management and education.
Educational Philosophy: I strongly believe that we have to prepare our students for their future by using differentiated learning techniques, encouraging critical thinking skills and teaching them to have an open mind about new ideas/technologies and how to best take advantage of what the future will have to offer, not simply using what worked in 1995. I believe that we have a responsibility to teach our students a highly desirable job skill — how to solve problems rather than learn rote memorization skills by using multiple sources of learning.
Brief biography: I graduated from Nokomis Regional High School a long time ago. I then spent almost 21 years in the U.S. Coast Guard and retiring as a CWO3 (Personnel Administration) in 1996. Since that time I have been a Assistant Family Teacher at Golden Rule Cottage, Behavior Tech and Team Leader in Boys Regroup. I then left in August 1998 to work as a Case Manager for Catholic Charities St. Michael’s Center in Bangor, then for EST in Pittsfield for a short time before coming back “home” to Hinckley in August 2000. Since returning to Good Will-Hinckley, I have worked as a Behavior Tech at Whitney Cottage, Education Technician at the Glenn Stratton Learning Center, Special Education Teacher – Glenn Stratton Learning Center and finally where I am today Special Education Teacher Averill/Alfond School. I believe very strongly in the Good Will-Hinckley mission statement and am very serious when I say that this is my “second” home.
Other: Interests, hobbies, stuff…I love to run, day hike, techie stuff, some archery and hanging around with my wife – she calls me “Harold the Barbarian” because I am so good at breaking stuff around the house.
What am best at: getting things done, multitasking, being organized, completing paperwork and working with people. I love to learn new things and enjoy using technology, even when it doesn’t always make my life easier.
My goals are to be ready for opportunities that may appear, but to enjoy what I already have.

I retired from the U.S. Coast Guard as a Warrant Officer in 1996. I am now a Special Education teacher who teaches English and co-teaches History at a small private school that serves students who have not been successful in the public school system. Outside of playing on the computer and driving my learners crazy, some of the things I like to do run/jog (getting older, I am not as nearly as fast as I used to be), day hike, read (Tolkien, Brooks, McKiernan, DeLint, etc. or supernatural horror), just hang out with my wife Mary, our six cats, and a dog.
